The Capital Region embraced five new state lawmakers last year, four members of the state Assembly and one state senator. All are completing their first term. Only one is Jewish and that is Assemblyman Phil Steck (D – Colonie,  Niskayuna, Schenectady).

Steck moved his allegiance and synagogue affiliation from Albany-based Congregation Beth Emeth to Schenectady-based Congregation Gates of Heaven. Steck’s children, Alexandra, 18, and Aaron 15, became a bar and bat mitzvah at Beth Emeth.

The JCC Jewish Film Festival will present The Camera Obscura, its third film in the film series, on Saturday, December 7th, 7:30 PM. “Halleli: I Will Sing Praise,” join singer and Cantorial soloist Leah Wolff-Pellingra in an afternoon of soulful Jewish music, including traditional melodies, contemporary settings and original compositions. ·         An exhibit of Dreidels (svivonim), in conjunction with the Hanukkah Holiday, will be held in the Finkle Display Case at the JCC of Schenectady. The exhibit includes over twenty dreidels borrowed from community members and gift shops of congregations Gates of Haven and Agudat Achim. The dreidels displayed present a wide variety of materials and styles. From a contemporary dreidel made of chenille by artist Ginger Ertz of Niskayuna, to dreidels made of wood, metal, glass, inlaid and carved wood, ceramic, and fused enamel.  The exhibit will continue until the end of December.
