The Capital Region embraced five new state lawmakers last year, four members of the state Assembly and one state senator. All are completing their first term. Only one is Jewish and that is Assemblyman Phil Steck (D – Colonie,  Niskayuna, Schenectady).

Steck moved his allegiance and synagogue affiliation from Albany-based Congregation Beth Emeth to Schenectady-based Congregation Gates of Heaven. Steck’s children, Alexandra, 18, and Aaron 15, became a bar and bat mitzvah at Beth Emeth.
