The Early Childhood Program at the Schenectady Jewish Com-munity Center provides quality child care for a variety of age and developmental levels. It is our belief that each child should be given the freedom to develop at his/her own rate. All of our programs are designed to help each child:
Develop positive self-esteem
Learn and practice appropriate cognitive, physical and social-emotional skills
Develop literacy and math readiness
Select activities according to own interests, including computer use
Enjoy creative projects
Learn to work cooperatively

How do we accomplish these goals?
Through play! Children are given the opportunity to create imaginative structures with blocks, both large and small. Children practice being waiters, doctors, teachers and parents in our dramatic area. They write notes, menus, books and captions for their pictures in their own handwriting and spelling, practicing emergent writing daily. Teachers read to the children, utilizing follow-up activities to enhance literacy skills. Children count, make patterns and make and read graphs about all types of topics–food likes and dislikes, favorite games, etc. They measure and compare! They learn that science experiments don't always work, but that we also learn from our mistakes and failures. Computer games give the children opportunities to help each other, solve problems, learn cognitive skills and learn to take turns. They swim, run through obstacle courses, climb and jump! Children paint, color, paste, design and create art that is from their own imagination. They learn to think by being encouraged to solve their own problems and answer their own questions, with guidance from the teachers. The children learn about cultures other than their own, while becoming knowledgeable about Jewish values, holidays and traditions.
Our children are loved and protected, yet encouraged to stretch themselves to become all of which they are capable. Finally, we encourage them to question the world around them, find the answers, and in so doing, become life-long learners!

Our program welcomes children of all faiths and backgrounds.
